Located at the
foothills of the Appalachian Mountains near Canoe Creek, in Etowah County,
Alabama, Local Joe's is a small country store owned and operated by Jodie and Karen Stanfield
and their family. The smell of freshly smoked pork, chicken, and turkey beckons
far before one reaches the destination at the corner of Highway 411 (Rainbow
Drive) and Pleasant Valley Road. In a day and age when the hustle and bustle of
everyday life seems to be overwhelming, it is nice to take a trip somewhere
that carries and individual, or family, back to a simpler time. Fresh, local-grown produce displayed,
handshakes accompanied by small talk from strangers, and a tall glass of sweet
tea greets visitors on the front porch. Nestled
in a thicket of pine, maple and oak trees, Local Joe’s Trading Post is a place
where everyone is welcome and soon becomes family.
old home place that has been turned into a store still has the original
tongue-and-groove hardwood flooring, wooden windows, and large front
porch. Hidden behind the barn doors, of
what used to be the garage, is a large assortment of catering supplies to
accommodate private, intimate dinners for ten to twenty guests, or a charity
event for a thousand people. A fresh coat of paint and other modern additions
have transformed this place into the talk of the town that it is today. Just beyond
the front door of the store are the very best smoked meats, baked goods, fresh
tomatoes, corn and peas that can be purchased. The vibrant green and red
tomatoes, orange and yellow peppers, as well as the fresh baked muffins and decorated
cookies catch the eye, just as much as the character of the store itself.
smoke billowing from many handmade smokers that surround the porch and side
deck, the aroma drifting for a quarter of a mile cause hunger pains regardless
of the time of day. Strawberry bread, cinnamon
rolls, and sausage balls baking in the oven tantalize the nostrils as well.
With every step you take inside, the scents mingle together giving the feeling
of a holiday meal at Granny’s house.
a seat at the picnic table on the front porch, one may hear the sound of a
local musician strumming a guitar and singing a melody and the laughter of
friends and families sharing time together at other picnic tables under the trees. The
friendly kitchen staff chuckle and tease one another while they provide service
with a smile. As the local football fans banter back and forth about the most
recent game, the cashier tells the customers to have a blessed day.
Joe’s Trading Post is a reminder of an era long ago when people took time to
visit, pray with, and truly love their neighbors. It is a charming country
store where everyone soon feels as if they have come home to family.
Local Joe's is based on the belief that customers' needs are of the utmost importance. The entire team is committed to meeting those needs. As a result, a high percentage of business is from repeat customers and referrals.
